Launched in 1998, the York
County Starfish Awards are a collaboration among Kennebunk
Savings Bank, United Way of York County, and the York County
Coast Star to promote volunteerism. These awards recognize
unsung heroes who contribute their time and talent as
volunteers. Representatives of the United Way, the York County
Coast Star, and Kennebunk Savings Bank review nominations from
community members twice per year and select outstanding
volunteers in three categories: individual, group and youth.
Each month, the York County Coast Star writes a feature story
about a recipient and the organization for whom they volunteer;
and the Kennebunk Savings Bank Foundation awards $500 to the
volunteer's charity of choice. Some past award winners include: |
 |
Village Quilters of York, who
make colorful quilts for nursing home residents, AIDS babies,
and infirm patients at York Hospital. |
 |
Robert Remington of York, who
is a third-grade mentor at the York Village Elementary
School. |
 |
Wells High School LEAD group,
who tackled the deteriorating condition of the school's
auditorium by initiating a campaign to install new seats. |
